Excitement, energy and school spirit filled the Queen’s Park Savannah on Sunday May 3, 2026, as we at St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain proudly hosted our highly anticipated 190th Anniversary Walkathon and inaugural 5K. The event brought together students, teachers, parents, past pupils, family members and supporters in celebration of our remarkable milestone of 190 years of excellence.
The event began early in the morning as participants gathered for registration and warm-up activities before the official start of the Walkathon and 5K. Dressed in specially designed anniversary jerseys, participants eagerly prepared to take on the route around the Queen's Park Savannah.
The Walkathon and 5K formed part of our year-long 190th anniversary celebrations under the theme “Bloom Where You Are Planted.”
Throughout the event, participants displayed determination, enthusiasm and teamwork as they completed the race. Some competed for top placements while others participated simply to support the school and promote healthy living. Hydration stations and event officials were stationed along the route to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants. At the finish line, runners and walkers were greeted with applause and encouragement as they proudly collected their commemorative medals.
The event also featured medal presentations and celebrations for outstanding participants. Friends and families gathered to take photographs and celebrate the achievements of competitors and supporters alike. The historic corridors of Pembroke Street were completely transformed as St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain kicked off its milestone 190th anniversary celebrations with a truly breathtaking event: "SJC Turns Blue." Hundreds of current students, proud alumnae, teachers, and well-wishers began gathering in front of the school, buzzing with anticipation. Walking through the gates under the school's familiar motto, Sapientia et Scientia, the immense pride and deep sense of sisterhood filled the air. Founded in 1836, the school embraced the anniversary theme "Bloom Where You Are Planted," celebrating nearly two centuries of shaping exceptional women and leaving an undeniable mark on Trinidad and Tobago.
The evening's formal proceedings began with a heartfelt opening ceremony that grounded the celebration in the school's rich spiritual and cultural history. After a warm welcome from Parent Support Group Chair, Laurel Lezama, a student beautifully executed the national anthem, bringing a proud stillness over the courtyard. Immediately following the anthem, the Vice Principal, Sister Lorraine, stepped forward to deliver a moving opening prayer, setting a tone of deep gratitude and reflection. Speeches from school leadership, including Principal, Maritza Ramphal, followed, highlighting the deep-rooted Cluny traditions of justice, excellence, and love that have defined a "Convent girl" for 190 years.
While the speeches and prayer set a meaningful and respectful tone, the music truly brought the night to life. Led by the esteemed John Thomas, the SJC Choir delivered a spectacular performance that moved the crowd. He has a special way of making young voices shine. Under his direction, the choir flowed effortlessly through a mix of songs that honored the school's past and set the perfect energy for the rest of the night.
The absolute highlight hit right at 7:00 p.m. After a thrilling countdown, the switch was flipped, and the entire school was coated in a brilliant, glowing sea of blue light. It was a stunning sight that perfectly captured the school's radiant legacy. Looking at those blue lights, it was clear that the legacy of the institution is still thriving, ready to inspire the next generation of women for years to come.
Happy 190th Anniversary to the past and present pupils!
The SJC ALL STARS Basketball Team has achieved something extraordinary. In just two years of competition, this young program has risen from modest beginnings to stand tall as North Zone Champions in both the Under-15 and Open Female Divisions, and National Champions in the U15 Female category, with a proud 2nd Place finish in the Open Female category. What makes this journey remarkable is not only the trophies but the story behind them. Three years ago, the team began with only a handful of players, training without hoops, guided by the vision and dedication of Coach Lennox Sobers. He instilled foundational skills, discipline, and resilience—never taking shortcuts, always emphasizing growth. That foundation has now carried the ALL STARS to the National stage, proving that hard work and unity can build champions.
Last year, the ALL STARS made a definitive debut with a 2nd Place finish in the U15 Division and 3rd Place in the Open Female Division. This year, they returned stronger, hungrier, and more determined. The U15 squad showcased defensive grit and unbreakable teamwork, while the Open Female team embodied resilience, bouncing back from setbacks to deliver clutch performances. Together, they have written a new chapter in SJC sporting history.
As the ALL STARS continue to grow in numbers and strength, they carry forward what they proudly call “Legacy in Motion”—a culture built on:
• The Pride of SJC,
• The Strength of our chants,
• And the Spirit of our community.
Ms. Darlington reflected on the journey: “Determination gets you started, teamwork keeps you going, resilience helps you bounce back, and hard work makes champions. These players have proven that success is earned through sweat, sacrifice, and unity.”
The SJC ALL STARS are more than a team—they are a family. They are Unity. Resilience. Champions. They are the SJC ALL STARS.
